Avila Beach Remediation Project, Avila Beach, California
Project Name: Avila Beach Remediation Project, Avila Beach, California Services: Remediation Oversight and Confirmation Assessment Client: County of San Luis Obispo
Padre staff assisted the County of San Luis Obispo in overseeing the assessment and remediation of the extensive soil and groundwater contamination in the city of Avila Beach. The soil and groundwater contamination was the result of historical oil company operation of a tank farm and pier in Avila Beach.
The initial cleanup effort addressed release of petroleum hydrocarbons in the beach surf zone and an adjacent creek estuary. Thousands of cubic yards of contaminated sand were removed for offsite treatment and disposal. Padre monitored the excavation activities and the associated confirmation sampling.
Padre reviewed the work plan and Phase II assessment work performed at the tank farm and other areas within Avila Beach on behalf of both the County of San Luis Obispo and the Regional Water Quality Control Board (RWQCB). Padre staff members were also involved in a confirmation assessment prepared as part of an environmental impact report on the remediation of the entire town. Padre was also a member of the monitoring team selected to perform environmental monitoring for the remediation of the town on behalf of the County of San Luis Obispo and the RWQCB.
